iPhone firmware version 3.0 to be released in the coming month
Apple revealed that the iPhone version 3.0 will be unveiled (note unveiled,. the release may be a few days later) in an
event later in March 2009. Clearly, with the impending release of the Palm Pre and the heat from other smartphone makers, Apple felt the need to steal the limelight. The new firmware should be released for the iPhone 2G, the iPhone 3G, the 1st generation iPod Touch and the newer 2nd generation iPod Touch.
In the few years that the iPhone has been on the market, it's taken the lead over other competing smartphones, although it lacks some basic features. One often touting shortcoming of the iPhone is copy and paste and MMS (Multimedia Messaging System), both features found on more basic models. Version 3.0 of the iPhone software should hopefully address some of these shortcomings while adding other "wow" features, increasing the iPhones lead (and Apple's profitability). One other major feature lacking on the iPhone is the ability to run multiple applications at once, however given Apple's protectiveness around the stability of the iPhone, Apple fans may be waiting awhile for this one.
Should Apple fix these shortcomings, they might find themselves in an unassailable position in the smartphone market, with competitors playing second place to the iPhone for may years to come.
