iPhone to be sold unlocked in the UK
The famous UK retailer play.com will sell the Apple iPhone 8gb and 16gb officially unlocked for the first time. The 8gb 3G will cost an eye-watering £549.99 while the 16gb 3G will cost only £50 more, although this appears to be an introductory special, with it usually costing £649.99. With the impending introduction of the 3rd generation iPhone,
Apple looks to be trying to flog as many of the current model of iPhone as possible. The iPhone looks to be available from the 27th of March 2009, but you can pre-order it if you want. The sim-free and unlocked officially from Apple iPhone has been available in other countries and this new offering from play.com will need to be paired with an existing contract, ideally with unlimited data. Of course, this will cost you a fair amount per month and it will be hard to beat the current contract iPhone available from O2.
Those braver of course can simply unlock an iPhone 3G or buy a pre-unlocked iPhone 3G, saving the hassle.
