Verizon iPhone 4
Apple and Verizon recently announced the availability of the iPhone 4 on the Verizon network, which uses CDMA technology. Pre-orders have been open for a week or so, with customers being able to buy the phone on February 10th 2011 - hopefully those that pre-ordered will receive their phones on time, or even the day before.
So what's the difference between the GSM iPhone available from AT&T and the CDMA iPhone 4 from Verizon? Well, for one, CDMA, a technology used to transmit the signal from your phone to the towers, is less widely used than GSM, so your iPhone 4 will not work in as many countries as the GSM version. This list includesmany American countries but excludes Africa, Australia, almost all of Europe and much of Asia.
The other key difference is that like other CDMA devices, the Verizon iPhone will not be able to handle data and voice calls simultaneously, meaning no browsing the web while you talk on the phone will not work. Also, Verizon has indicated that it will not be offering any early upgrade promotions.
There are a couple of pluses, the big one being that Verizon's CDMA iPhone will be able to serve as a mobile hotspot, which means you can use your iPad wifi via your iPhone to connect to the Internet.
A 16GB version of the iPhone 4 will cost $199 with a two-year contract. A 32GB version will cost $299.
