What is the difference between the iPhone 2G and 3G?

One of the most common questions people ask is the difference between the 1st

generation Apple iPhone (2G) and the 2nd generation Apple iPhone (3G). While there are several differences, the main ones are highlighted below:

  • the original iPhone came in 4gb, 8gb and 16gb versions, while the 2nd generation iPhone came in 8gb and 16gb models;
  • the original iPhone came with an aluminium shell while the iPhone 3G comes in a black plastic shell;
  • the original iPhone has only GPRS and EDGE data options while the iPhone 3G (as the name suggests) support GPRS, EDGE and 3G (both have Wi-Fi);
  • the iPhone 3G is available in black and white;
  • the iPhone 3G has GPS, while the earlier version has only assisted GPS (not true GPS).

There are several other differences, but what's important to note is that both models can run the same 2.21 firmware, which gives them full access to the Apple iPhone application store.
